John Maler Collier (27 January 1850 – 11 April 1934), called ‘Jack’ by his family and friends, was a leading British artist, and an author. He painted in in the Pre-Raphaelite style, and was one of the most prominent portrait painters of his generation. This remarkable image is eloquent testimony to the survival of Pre-Raphaelite values as a treatment of the famous fairy story of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ that had been told many times in European literature.
